With California facing a budget shortfall, the Governor is once
again calling for cuts to the IHSS program.  Schwarzenegger
has proposed an 18% reduction in hours of non-medical domestic
services, effective July 1, 2008.  Hearings on his proposed
cuts are being held this month in the Capitol.

Your UDW executive board elect, — all of who are real home care
providers — know the impact that ANY
cuts have in the lives of providers and their clients.  Some
of your E-Board members-elect and UDW staff met with legislators
at the Homecare Council Legislative Reception on January 16th, to
put faces with the stories of home care providers and let these representatives
know we need and appreciate their support of home care and IHSS.

UDW activists, senior organizations, disability groups, homecare
workers and community leaders, joined with IHSS recipients to speak
out against Governor Schwarzenegger’s across-the-board vetoes of
bipartisan legislation written to protect and enhance the State’s
In-Home Supportive Services Program.

Haiti Relief Efforts

At this moment of urgent need, the Haitian government – and the people of Haiti – have asked for help from the world community. Those of us who can must heed this call in whatever way possible. AFSCME is donating $ 25,000 in relief funds to the Solidarity Center's Earthquake Relief for Haitian Workers fund. In addition, we encourage affiliates, members and staff to go to the AFL-CIO Solidarity Center website at: www.solidaritycenter.org and click on the words “donate now." Please type “AFSCME” when asked for your union affiliation.
