UDW members across the state are working hard to gather support for the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA), a measure now before Congress that would make it easier for workers to join unions.

At least 1,000 UDW members have written to U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) urging her to cosponsor EFCA. Members also attended a rally at the State Capitol in Sacramento on March 17th to rally statewide support for the bill.

“We support the Employee Free Choice Act to help thousands of homecare providers (as well as other workers), who DO NOT HAVE A UNION so they can have the same rights and benefits UDW providers have,” said Rosalina Flores, UDW Vice President.

“Because UDW providers are organized, we have been able to secure and protect our wages and benefits even though Gov. Schwarzenegger and others continue to attack the IHSS program. All workers should have the same ability to defend themselves against anti-worker employers and politicians.

“We urge Congress to pass and President Obama to sign the Employee Free Choice Act as soon as possible.”

EFCA establishes a "card check" basis for union organizing that would allow employees to unionize once a majority of workers at a company have signed union authorization forms. This would supplant current laws requiring that unionization be based on elections using secret ballots. The bill also has provisions strengthening penalties against businesses perceived to be retaliating against union organizers, and increases the role of federal mediators in union contract settlements.

A new Gallup Poll, released on March 17th, shows a majority of Americans favoring both the EFCA bill and the concept of more unionization. See Poll
