The Promise by Mahnaz Firouzi

I promised her.  And so, we were happy that there was no fracture.  The next day when we visited the doctor he asked her; “What bothers you the most?”  She said “Living in a nursing home.  I want to take my last breath in my own home.”  The doctor also promised to do his best.

One day I found Frances and her daughter very upset, because they had been told they had “IHSS Share of Cost.”  When I contacted her social worker she said “don’t worry, it is a computer mistake.”  And so I continued working but did not receive my pay check.  I contacted IHSS and they said it is a Share of Cost and “she must pay you.”  I said “but you should have told me about what this meant when I asked – before I worked not afterwards.”

I contacted the union and they said you better go to court — appeal.  I did so and the court order was in my favor but still her daughter refused to pay me.  So I gave up and was very sorry.

Not for the money, but for the promise — that I could not keep it.
