Contest Winning Essay –
My small hand took yours as we walked along the seashore. What a pair we were in our matching Hawaiian dresses and tanned legs. We’re still a pair, but now, it’s your frail hand that reaches to take mine. We still walk together when you are able, but Hawaiian dresses have made way for comfy clothes and well, our legs are anything but tanned these days.
Your memorable beach picnics have been replaced with tube feedings, your flip-flops with slippers and your bicycle with a walker. I know it breaks your heart that your health is failing, my heart is shattered, but I remain strong for you.
How lucky we are to have both grown up in California at the seashore. How lucky for us to have a program like IHSS, that allows you to remain at home with me, for only I can care for you in such a loving way. Thank you IHSS for giving my elegant, aging mother her dignity. Thank you for allowing me to take care of her in our home, and not place her in a crowded state facility
