Virginia Wilson, beloved UDW volunteer, dies

Virginia Wilson
Virginia Wilson–”Ms. V”–one of the most dedicated and beloved volunteer leaders in UDW’s history, has lost her battle with cancer in San Diego.

Virginia meets with then-UDW Administrator Flora Walker and AFSCME International President Gerald McEntee.

UDW honored  Virginia  at a chapter meeting in San Diego in February 2010. Here’s what Executive Director Doug Moore had to say about her:

We are here tonight to honor Virginia Wilson, our beloved Ms. V, one of the most senior members of UDW.

Ms. V has worked tirelessly over the years to build her union. Yes, it is in many respects her union. She has mentored and has been an inspiration to ALL of us in some shape, form or fashion.

We can always count on Ms. V to be there to phone bank, go to rallies, and tell anyone who will listen about how far UDW has come.

Do you know why? Because she has history! She has been through our struggles! She knows the price we have paid and what we have accomplished for our members and the people we serve.

The members of UDW and our staff owe her and the others who came before her a debt of gratitude!

Had it not been for these early trailblazers, there would not be a UDW today. They worked together, they stuck together and they fought together to build a better life for Homecare Providers.

Despite all she has done for us, Ms. V has never asked for much, just to be treated with dignity and respect….dignity and respect because the work we do is God’s work and because the sacrifices we make are made with love.

So Ms. V, this is your day. Today we pay tribute to you for all you have given to build this great union. We thank you for inspiring us to fight for and build our union. We are grateful to you for keeping the UDW train moving down the tracks of justice, dignity and equality for all Homecare Providers and their clients.

Let me close with a quote from columnist Ellen Goodman:

“I have never been especially impressed by the heroics of people who are convinced they are about to change the world. I am more awed by those who struggle to make one small difference after another.”

Ms. V, on behalf of your UDW family, We Love You.
May God continue to bless you.

I am very, VERY sorry to hear this news. I remember Virginia dearly from the “old days” when we first began going to union meetings and came to know some of the wonderful people that volunteered their time to help homecare workers and clients. Virginia always had a kind word and made me feel welcome to the union.
Bless you Virginia – we love you!

It was Thursday when I received the call from Sandra. She said that Ms. V had been admitted to the MICU of the Sharp Hospital in La Mesa. She couldn’t talk due to the tubes in her mouth, but had written my name down. She wanted to see me.

I called Doug Moore who rushed with me to see her.

As she lights up with our sight, she wrote: “This is best”. I asked what she meant, thinking this meant that she is pulling some sort of a life support. I asked what do you mean this is best? She continued to write: union ever. She wrote: this is best union ever! And tears rolled down our eyes.

    I love you Ms. V!

    Onward and Forward!

    Johanna

I had the pleasure of serving with Virginia on the IHSS Advisory Committee for the last two and a half years. Virginia was very involved, well informed and very committed. There was something about her spirit that I took a strong liking to her. We would hang out together on some of our trips to San Jose for the CICA convention or talk on the phone sometimes on the weekend. I will miss her smile, her laughter and her friendship. I thank God for the opportunity to know Virginia! Many Prayers to the family. Virginia was a very special lady!!!

Virginia was committed to worker empowerment for as long as I knew her. She spoke passionately about the needs of IHSS providers/workers whenever and wherever I saw her. I first met Virginia when she was working for Addus. It was clear to me then and remained obvious to me over the years; Virginia truly cared about providers and the consumers they assisted. For the past four years, Virginia sat on the IHSS Advisory Committee representing IHSS providers. Ever the advocate, she consistently and eloquently addressed the needs of consumers and providers. I thank her for her support and for the kisses on the cheek I could count on whenever I saw her. Her light burned brightly and will remain with us as we move to meet the work before us. Godspeed Virginia.

Ms.V you were an inspiration to all of us at UDW. Your loyalty to your union really demonstrates what “service” is all about.
There will never be another Ms. V she dedicated her life to building this union. She is in a better place where there is no more suffering. She is at peace.
As Mother Jones said”mourn for those who are not wiith us and fight like hell for those who are living” Ms. V we all know thats what you would want we will keep on fighting for dignity and respect for all homecare providers part of you lives in all of us at UDW so I can promise you this, UDW will fight the right fight and never take a step backwards. Your spirit will always be on the battlefield of justice when we fight for those who are unable to fend for themselves.
