My husband and I have taken care of our son, who has a traumatic brain injury, for 3.5 years with no respite. Our son qualifies for a skilled nursing facility, but like many, we absolutely will not place him there. Our son can do nothing for himself, has seizures, is incontinent, etc. When we learned of IHSS, we were very grateful because it helps us stay here to take care of him. It takes both of us to take care of him and we do not work outside the home because this is 24/7 non-stop care. I find it so difficult to believe that the government is actually thinking of cutting the funding for families like ours. We are actually saving the state money, yet the decision makers want to hinder our ability to give our son the best care. It takes every bit of funding to pay rent, buy incontinence supplies, purchase food and nutrition. I would imagine that every family like ours makes a huge financial and physical sacrifice to take care of their loved one.
This will be difficult for us and does not make sense.
