A big win for UDW members in Riverside County!

En español |The Riverside County Board of Supervisors has asked the state to increase UDW members’ wages to $11.50 an hour.

As you know, homecare provider wages were held hostage by former Gov. Schwarzenegger, who tried to roll back all provider wages to $8.00 an hour in the 2008/2009 state budget.

Thanks to UDW and its allies, a state district court judge stopped the rollback with an injunction which kept wages at their current level ($10.25 an hour in Riverside.)

Since that time, your union has been working with County officials to resolve the wage issue. As a result, the county has decided to move forward with the wage increase.  If everything goes smoothly, the wage increase should be reflected in paychecks on or about March 15th.

Here is the complete wage increase schedule negotiated in the current UDW contract with Riverside County:

  • Dec 1, 2007 $  9.75 per hour
  • July 1, 2008 $10.25 per hour
  • July 1, 2009 $10.75 per hour
  • July 1, 2010 $11.50 per hour

This is a 28% increase over the life of this contract and represents a 62% increase in wages since the first UDW contract in 2003!

It goes up a little and goes down a lot. Retroactive pay inceases get lost in the smoke.

Was Judge Wilken even apprised of the fact that there was a wage increase due to take place as she was issuing the injuction? I saw no mention of it in the pleadings.

Good Job Union! Glad to see this finally happening. We needed some good news. I sure hope this wage increase happens. You just never know for sure. Hopefully this will make up for some of the many hours cut.
I was reading the Budget info put out by CDCAN and they are saying that..”the governer’s budget plan includes continuing appeals in federal court to overturn the lower court decision that blocked the State from rolling back our wages to $8.00 per hour.” Look’s like Jerry is trying to get the lower courts decision overturned and lower our pay.
I don’t think Jerry is any friend of IHSS. At least Whitman was honest in her opinion about us. Jerry was not.
He pretend to support the program but he has done everything he can to gut the program. Many vunerable people will be hurt if he is allowed to continue his plan of attack on us.

Uh-oh, I just re-read the first sentence of this article:
“The Riverside County Board of Supervisors has asked the STATE to increase the UDW members wages to $11.50 an hour”.
The state I am guessing, will just say no – due to the major deficit in the state’s budget.
I don’t really think that they will be on board to give us more money while they are trying so hard to take money away from us. I hope I am wrong.

I don’t understand why they can’t just leave our pay alone?? We work hard to keep our loved ones well at home, with out getting sick, and not haveing them being in the hospital, to where it more expensive to have them there!! They get sicker in there!!

So I take it we will not get our retro pay? How is that legal?

What happened to the legal and binding part of the contract between the UDW and the County Board of Supervisors? The State of california is not interferring in the State employees prior contractual agreements that would effect cuts and raises.

UDW together with the IHSS Coalition has taken this to the courts. See story on our homepage.
