Kelly and her provider made the effort to travel to Sacramento from Placer County on January 27th to protest cuts to IHSS. She talked with us near the steps of the capitol during the rally. Here is what she had to say…
I depend on the care of my IHSS providers to live in my own home and be independent. Because I have providers through this program, I can live with my sister. That way California taxpayers do not pay for my housing, food and all the other costs associated with living in an institution. And of course, my life is much better, living with people that know and love me.
My mother passed away from complications of this same disease (MS) in 2009. My sister was also diagnosed with MS three years ago. My dad cannot take care of me and I do not have other family members that can.
If these cuts go through, I will not be able to have the care I need. I would be stuck in bed a great deal of the time and I’m really not sure what would happen. Nursing homes would cost up to $8000, but getting help in my home costs far less.
I urge the powers that be to continue this program for the many people in this situation who simply want to live their lives.
