When Scott Walker rammed through his “budget repair bill” last year, it didn’t repair the budget, but it did eliminate dues check-off for thousands of public service workers in Wisconsin. This year, AFSCME members are taking charge to protect the strength of the union and ensure we can continue the fight for all Wisconsin working families. New technology has been central to AFSCME’s organizing efforts.

“We’re just getting started,” said Dan Bemowski, head of the Council 40 Street and Highway Committee. “Members want to know what affects them directly … we’re trying to get the word out”

Councils 24 and 40 each held tele-town hall meetings to allow members to discuss actions that have saved jobs, staved off cuts, ensured workplace safety and fought off privatization under Walker’s anti-worker regime. Members also shared stories about organizing successes in the recent months. These calls generated excitement among members who are eager to sign up AFSCME members and participate in the recall of Gov. Walker and four anti-worker state senators. These councils, along with Council 48 also created a secure, Internet-accessible sign-up form for current and new members to join AFSCME and support PEOPLE at www.wisconsinunionstrong.org.

“This is a new ballgame,” AFSCME Sec.-Treas. Lee A. Saunders said during a tele-town hall. “But you’ve adapted. You’re writing a new chapter for our union and inspiring AFSCME members across the country.”

AFSCME has developed an iPad application to help organizers record member signups in an efficient, organized and secure manner. The app, specifically designed to comply with current Wisconsin law, allows members to provide critical contact information and renew their recurring PEOPLE contributions to ensure this summer’s recall campaigns and the November elections in Wisconsin are well-funded and victorious.
