UDW's parent union - AFSCME - holds their PEOPLE conference every
two years to bring together leaders, activists and members for
the purpose of strengthening our legislative and political goals,
sharing, learning and having a good time!
Left, Deputy Administrator for UDW from AFSCME, Doug Moore, addresses
members and teaches about grassroots teamwork.

|
| UDW and home care workers need to have a strong voice
in Sacramento and in Washington, D.C. because most of the funding
for the IHSS home care program comes from the federal and State government. (Your
local County is the third source of funding and it is they who also
administrate the program.) |
 |
The best way for UDW to support home care workers and clients/consumers
is to have them involved, speaking out, and meeting each other as
well as their elected representatives.
It
is when providers (and clients) come together that we build a
bigger, better, UDW!
UDW/NUHHCE/AFSCME bring their members together for the PEOPLE
conference once a year. A limited number of activists are
sponsored for their travel and lodging expenses to this event. If
you wish to get involved contact: unionheadquarters@udwa.org

We welcome your participation -
whether it is through visiting with us in Sacramento, local meetings
in your community, or writing letters/phoning your representatives. To

Santa Barbara county ADDUS workers committed to
fight against the ending of the ADDUS contract.

|
|

UDW leadership and home care provider/activists
shared information and strategies about how to keep their contract
and why ADDUS is an
important service for Santa Barbara residents using the IHSS program.

Members are building their union
by talking with elected representatives - Santa Barbara workers
meet with County Supervisor Centeno above.
|
Many members contributed with information about their
activities (like the new Labor Management Committee)
as well as signing up other members, soliciting information about
other issues that concern care givers in Santa Barbara, and handing
out refreshments.

"This union is truly converting
into a union run by providers."

ADDUS
workers, clients and UDW leaders
unite for press conference and rally in Santa Barbara
May 12, 2006

A gathering of ADDUS workers, their
clients, family members, and UDW leaders came together Friday
at the Santa Barbara County courthouse in protest of a decision
by the Department of Social Services to terminate the County's
contract with ADDUS.
|
|
County Supervisor Salud Carbajal, who attended Friday's protest,
spoke about having once worked as a caregiver. Mr. Carbajal
said that he thought the department's action was premature, and
spoke about it being "a Safety Net Issue...
When you're talking about people's lives, it's never just about saving money."
|
|
 |
Disabled ADDUS clients who were at the Courthouse on Friday testified
about relying on ADDUS to manage their care and find a substitute
quickly if a worker is sick. The county will not provide this type
of service if their contract is cancelled.
|
|
The media was on hand, and interviewed several of the
key speakers. The resulting coverage appeared in the Santa
Barbara News Press, who published an article in the Local section
by Melinda Burns "Home care workers protest loss of county
contract"
Another article on this subject was written in the Santa Maria
Times and may be read
online.
