URGENT for UDW Members: Sign Updated Card to Stay a Member

IMPORTANT! In order to remain a UDW member and have dues payments automatically deducted, you must reauthorize your membership here. A new proposed rule by the federal government would prohibit union dues and other payments like health insurance premiums from being deducted automatically out of IHSS paychecks. This rule is almost certain to be made final in the coming weeks. The form on www.MyUDW.org contains updated language that will allow you to continue having these payments deducted from your paycheck. We are also working hard to find a solution to help you continue automatic deductions for your health care payments. Even […]

UDW members demand lawmakers protect our privacy from Electronic Visit Verification (EVV)

On Tuesday, February 13, we joined IHSS providers from SEIU 2015 in a rally and lobby day at the California State Capitol. Together, we had a clear message for lawmakers: Protect the privacy and dignity of caregivers and our clients from Electronic Visit Verification (EVV). We wanted legislators to know that we have serious concerns like: How will it work? Will it invade my or my client’s private lives? How much will it cost? These are important questions about the federally-mandated implementation of EVV that have yet to be decided by the state. That’s why we were at the capitol—and […]

CDSS offers clarification on this year’s W-2

CDSS offers clarification on this year’s W-2

A lot of IHSS providers have noticed that our 2017 W-2s don’t look quite right—or at least don’t look the same as last year. Many of us are concerned that our W-2s contain errors that could cause us big headaches—or cost money—when we file our taxes. But now we can breathe easier! According to the California Department of Social Services (CDSS), there is no epidemic of incorrect W-2s. Instead, your W-2 may look very different than last year because live-in caregivers are able to file a form exempting our caregiver wages from taxes. This change is making many family providers’ […]

Orange County teams up with anti-caregiver Freedom Foundation at IHSS orientations

At the request of an anti-worker and out-of-state organization, Orange County officials struck their latest blow to home care workers on Friday when they instituted a new policy at IHSS orientations to discourage new IHSS providers from becoming union members — a move that is not only anti-worker, but is also against the law. The county appears to be doing the bidding of a Washington state-based group called the Freedom Foundation. This isn’t the first time the Freedom Foundation has interfered at orientations and gone out of their way to harass home care workers and undermine our right to unionize. […]

UDW joins 115 groups demanding California Members of Congress Reject Tax Bill

UDW joins 115 groups demanding California Members of Congress Reject Tax Bill

This week, Congress is voting to pass a bill called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that will fundamentally change our economy by moving money from working families to the very wealthy and corporations. As a union of low-wage IHSS providers who care for seniors and people with disabilities, UDW vehemently opposes the bill and the deep, dangerous cuts it will trigger in Medicaid, IHSS, Medicare, Social Security and other essential programs. On Monday, we joined 115 other organizations to send a letter to California’s Congressional delegation outlining our concerns about the bill and the effects it will have on […]
