Telephone town hall welcomes newest UDW members and gives important overtime update

Telephone town hall welcomes newest UDW members and gives important overtime update

Yesterday, we hosted a tele-town hall to welcome our sisters and brothers from CUHW into the UDW family. About 1,600 providers participated in the call, and 200 viewed our livestream. With the help of our host, UDW’s Organizing and Field Services Director Matthew Maldonado, we discussed our UDW member benefits, heard an update on overtime pay for IHSS providers, and talked about our campaign to end the 7% cut permanently. Our speakers, UDW Executive Director Doug Moore, President Editha Adams, Legislative Director Kristina Bas Hamilton, and Tuolumne County IHSS provider Lori LaScola took questions from members throughout the town hall. IHSS providers in Riverside and San Diego attend first ever state-level bargaining meeting

IHSS providers in Riverside and San Diego attend first ever state-level bargaining meeting

Last week, IHSS providers in Riverside and San Diego came together in San Diego for our first round of contract negotiations with the state. We sat down with representatives from the California Department of Human Resources, who represent the IHSS Statewide Authority, to take the first step in a multi-step process toward a new contract that will cover both counties. This meeting comes after our initial meeting in June when Riverside County providers met with state representatives to prepare for state-level bargaining. San Diego County moved into the process soon after and Orange County providers will join us in 2016. Before the move to state-level […]

Decoding the IHSS timesheet and paycheck process

Decoding the IHSS timesheet and paycheck process

In fact, too many of us have experienced issues with late or missing timesheets and paychecks. The missing LA County timesheets—which were later blamed on a delivery issue by the United States Postal Service—have reinvigorated our efforts to improve the IHSS paycheck and timesheet process. It’s hard to keep our households afloat when we can’t rely on a steady paycheck! Earlier this month, UDW homecare providers and leaders toured […]

UDW provider Christine Nguyen helped her client get the hours of care he needed—and won $30,000 in backpay

My name is Christine Nguyen, and I’ve been an IHSS provider in San Diego for 16 years and a proud member of UDW since 2001. Before I became a provider, I owned my own business. When it closed, I began my new career in homecare when I started taking care of an elderly woman who needed help. I do this work because I want to keep people in their homes among their families and friends, so they can live full and independent lives. Right now, John is my only client. He’s 84-years-old, and I care for him in my home—although […]
