Let’s remind our elected officials to protect homecare and Put People First

Let’s remind our elected officials to protect homecare and Put People First

We have had a lot of successes in the last year that saw raises in many counties as well as health care becoming available to more caregivers than ever before. Most recently, we saw a victory for caregivers in Stanislaus County: today members are voting on a wage increase after a hard-fought contract negotiation. Congratulations to everyone in Stanislaus! But we still have work to do. Contract negotiations are currently happening in Merced, Orange, Placer, and El Dorado where we need to make our voices heard. Merced caregiver Katrina Bucol said, “I care for my brother Randy and I promised […]

Our 2014 Priority: Protect Homecare

Our 2014 Priority: Protect Homecare

Our work as caregivers makes a difference in the lives of others. In 2014, we are working together to stop cuts to the IHSS program and to strengthen the bargaining power of caregivers. Cuts to IHSS hours worsen poverty and quality of care Despite California’s $6.3 billion unexpected surplus, the Governor’s budget continues a 7 percent cut to IHSS hours, undermining quality homecare and our ability to earn a living wage. Caregivers Celebrate Vietnamese New Year in Orange County

Caregivers Celebrate Vietnamese New Year in Orange County

As caregivers we come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, but we’re all united in our shared work as homecare providers. Sometimes this work can feel isolating so it’s nice when we can connect with our community at events. This past weekend was a really important celebration in the Vietnamese community: Vietnamese New Year, also known as Tết Nguyên Đán or Tết. In Orange County, the annual Tết Festival is the largest outside of Vietnam and UDW had a booth there to make sure members of the Vietnamese community know about California’s In-Home Supportive Services program (IHSS) and the […]

Brown budget will force caregivers further into poverty

Brown budget will force caregivers further into poverty

Contrary to first appearances, Brown budget contains a stinging hit that will disrupt care and slash pay Post by UDW Homecare Providers Union. Sacramento, CA –  People with disabilities, seniors, and their caregivers joined together today to highlight the devastating consequences of a hidden cut to the In-Home Supportive Services program in the Brown Administration’s budget. “If Governor Brown is successful in denying caregivers overtime pay, it would devastate my family,” said Mary Burch, a provider from Modesto who takes care of her 40-year-old daughter with a developmental disability. “I would lose over 100 hours of pay each month—a 40% cut to my […]

Celebrating our victories of the past, present, and future

Celebrating our victories of the past, present, and future

A message from UDW Executive Director Doug Moore: This is a season that is all about reflection and gratitude for everything we have in our lives. We gather with loved ones and leave behind the old while welcoming in the new. As we look forward to 2014, let’s take a moment to reflect on some of our victories and successes from the last year: We won raises and better health benefits for homecare providers in several UDW counties. We opened new offices for caregivers in San Diego and Santa Maria, saving our members money and planting our roots firmly in […]
