Last week, dozens of homecare workers joined child care providers at the state capitol in Sacramento for a day of action to urge lawmakers to pass Senate Bill 548 – The Raising Child Care Quality and Accessibility Act. The bill would give child care providers the right to unionize, improve the quality of child care through training for providers, and authorize a study that would determine how to improve parental engagement. Last month, I attended the 2015 AFSCME Women’s Leadership Academy (WLA), a five day, life-changing experience that I would recommend to all my UDW sisters. Earlier this week, homecare providers and UDW members from around the state participated in three days of action and lobbying in Sacramento to urge lawmakers to end the seven percent cut to IHSS hours. “We can’t wait. We’ve been cut for too many years,” UDW Statewide President Editha Adams said to a room full of homecare workers ahead of Monday’s activities. “Enough is enough. June 4, 2015 Hundreds of homecare workers rallied and marched with child care providers on Wednesday at the State Capitol to urge lawmakers to pass SB 548 – The Raising Child Care Quality and Accessibility Act.
