Your E-board members-elect at work in the Capitol
January 16, 2008 - Sacramento
Newly elected leaders meet with legislators to bring home care workers front and center; defending our jobs during the budget crises.

From left to right in the front row is Teresa Cuin, Margareta Jaramillo, Editha Adams,
Feel Good, and Russell Jones. From left to right back row Amy Debraga, Rudy Lopez,
William Reed, Laura Reyes and Brooks Ashby

With California facing a budget shortfall, the Governor is once again calling for cuts to the IHSS program.  Schwarzenegger has proposed an 18% reduction in hours of non-medical domestic services, effective July 1, 2008.  Hearings on his proposed cuts are being held this month in the Capitol.

Your UDW executive board elect, -- all of who are real home care providers -- know the impact that ANY cuts have in the lives of providers and their clients.  Some of your E-Board members-elect and UDW staff met with legislators at the Homecare Council Legislative Reception on January 16th, to put faces with the stories of home care providers and let these representatives know we need and appreciate their support of home care and IHSS.

Laura Reyes
President Elect of UDW Laura Reyes spoke to decision makers in Sacramento about the
lives of home care providers and why
the IHSS program is so important.
Doug Moore
Doug Moore, Deputy Administrator of UDW
represented us and communicated with legislators about how home care is an important part of the new healthcare system that is so badly needed in this country.

Crowd of protesters

UDW activists, senior organizations, disability groups, homecare workers and community leaders, joined with IHSS recipients to speak out against Governor Schwarzenegger's across-the-board vetoes of bipartisan legislation written to protect and enhance the State's In-Home Supportive Services Program.

We must keep writing, phoning, and emailing our legislators -- let them know we are watching, and we are registered voters.
