YOUR UDW EXECUTIVE BOARD
A Union run by home care providers, for home care providers

UDW Statewide Executive Board 2010

The members of United Domestic Workers of America have structured their union, through the UDW Constitution, to be governed by an Executive Board made up of home care providers.  Your "E-Board" (who were elected by mail ballot of all members) comes to agreement through democratic process (majority vote) and then instructs the Executive Director regarding their vision for UDW.

Each UDW county has elected representation at the statewide Executive Board through their county (or bargaining unit) Chapter Chair.  It is important for members to come to Chapter Meetings in their county, and give input to these representatives.

UDW STATEWIDE EXECUTIVE BOARD HIRES
DOUG MOORE AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
April 18, 2009 update; Doug Moore chosen Labor Leader of the Year for San Diego and Imperial Counties

Doug Moore, UDW Executive DirectorIn one of its first acts, the newly installed UDW Executive Board hired Doug Moore as the Executive Director to manage the UDW and staff on a day to day basis. Mr Moore will report directly to the Executive Board.

Doug Moore started his labor career over 25 years ago as a rank-and-file member of CWA becoming a shop steward and eventually Executive Vice President of CWA Local 9586 in Santa Fe, California. He worked for SEIU as an International Representative for several years before taking a position with the National AFL-CIO as Ohio State Director responsible for AFL-CIO programs for over a million members.

After being recruited by our parent union, AFSCME, as a Regional Field Administrator and promotion to Assistant Regional Director, Doug assisted in negotiating an agreement and helped to build a 20,000 strong union which was member driven. He also put together the first statewide Executive Board structure for the new AFSCME local 3299 and chaired their committee where a strong member activist program was developed and embraced by the new activists.

Doug was appointed as Deputy Administrator for the UDW in June 2005 and has been the day-to-day manager of the UDW working for the Administrator, Flora Walker. Together they have made the UDW financially solid and developed hundreds of new activists and tens of thousands of new members. Working with the AFSCME negotiator, Doug has helped to win the highest wages in the history of the UDW and led the fight to win affordable health insurance in San Diego.

In Doug's acceptance speech before the UDW Executive Board and staff, he said:

UDW is the largest AFSCME affiliate in California and we will use our strength to work with those who work with us.

We will build a stronger alliance with other organizations who share our interest and vision.

And we will stand up to our oppressors and take them on from county board to county board to send them a clear message and that message is homecare providers matter! We are not second class citizens and we will fight to end the classism, sexism and racism that we see everyday from these elected boards in our counties. And we will do this through a mass movement of people from all walks of life!

We need to change the way business is conducted in our counties we need to end cronyism in these counties and we demand to be treated with dignity and respect! And not like second class citizens.

We'll do this the old fashion way - Organize, Organize, Organize!

Because when we fight, We win!

I am very honored to have the opportunity to serve as the Executive Director of UDW.  You may ask why?

  • Because the work is not done.
  • We have laid the foundation by which a strong and powerful union will rise.
  • I want to be part of it.

I want to be part of a union that is governed by its members and as your Executive Director, I stand ready to lead.

We still have a long way to go but the UDW Express has made its way through the tunnel. It's at the station picking up members and building momentum.

Will you get on board and take a ride with me?
Will you ride from the San Diego to Riverside with me?
Will you ride f
rom Riverside to Orange with me?
Will you ride from Orange to Santa Barbara with me?
Will you ride from Santa Barbara to SLO with me?
Will you ride from SLO to Kern with me?
Will you ride from Kern to Merced with me?
Will you ride from Merced to Stanislaus with me?
Will you ride from Stanislaus to Placer with me?
Will you ride from Placer to El Dorado with me?
Will you ride from El Dorado to Butte with me?
Will you ride from Butte down to Sacramento and fight for the rights of homecare providers and their clients?

Will take this ride with me?

Will you get on board?
You don't need a ticket, you just need a union card!

Doug Moore
Executive Director, UDW
