Meet Your UDW
Statewide Advisory Board

The New UDW Advisory Board is composed of full dues paying members representing homecare workers from each UDW county.  The Committee will be providing important input on key policies, directions, and activities to UDW Administrators and staff.

Get to know your Advisory Board - they represent you, and can bring
your concerns or questions to the table!

Editha Adams, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
Editha Adams
San Diego
I've been a provider for my child for 8 years. I became an active volunteer at the San Diego office. I was concerned about wages and health insurance. I enjoy working with members and getting people involved.
Steve Salais, Stanislaus County Advisory Board Member.
Steve Salais
Stanislaus
There's a place in UDW for everyone's skills. In each county, we can make a difference and improve wages and benefits by getting out there.

John Steveson, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
John Stevenson
San Diego
UDW has been successful in organizing collective opposition to attacks on IHSS. There remains a huge amount of work to be done on all levels for caregivers. We will now set the course for UDW. Homecare workers need a Union that is responsive to our unique position as caregivers.
Cecilia York, Orange County Advisory Board Member.
Cecilia York
Orange
It's important to educate, organize, and mobilize members – as well as other home care providers – toward a better future. We should not be fragmented, but be one entity.

Alice Dolida, Santa Barbara County Advisory Board Member.
Alice Dolida
Santa Barbara
I have been going
door to door in
Santa Maria,
getting providers
involved. It's a
good chance to
build community
and support among
providers. And what
we reap with UDW
is our reward.
Gale Banuelos, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
Gale Banuelos
San Diego
I was a member for quite a while and never knew that the Union was supposed to be run by us! If it is going to be run by us, we need to get in here and start now.

Christine Jguyen, Orange County Advisory Board Member.
Christine Nguyen
Orange
I've been active
with UDW for three
years. The Union
takes care of us
and helps us get a
better salary if we
do our part
Ngoc-Hoa Tran, Orange County Advisory Board Member.
Ngoc-Hoa Tran
Orange
I am a provider for my sister. As a UDW activist, I try to get more providers involved. People need to know that any time they have a problem, the Union can help find a solution.

Feel Good, Santa Barbara County Advisory Board Member.
Feel Good
Santa Barbara
I was in Sacramento with UDW politicking for the Direct Deposit bill. That will make a big difference for people. Many providers can not afford it when a check doesn't come on time. I like the feeling when I help someone in need; it's priceless.
Dolores Salas-Holstad, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.

I have been a provider for 15 years, and active with UDW since 1997. I have been very committed to gaining direct deposit. Providers are often home–bound with their clients. Direct deposit is about safety, not just convenience.

Patricia Ward, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
Patricia Ward
San Diego

My husband and I have two sons with a rare neuromuscular disease. I joined UDW in 2001. The more people who join, the more clout we will have. We need to let providers know about all the resources available to them through the union.

Chris Long, Riverside County Advisory Board Member.
Chris Long
Riverside
I am committed to building communications between activists, staff, and members. Providers and clients can be isolated and really need the personal connections to people who understand what they go through.

Carrie Young, Merced County Advisory Board Member.
Carrie Young
Merced

I have been a provider for ten years. UDW can do important things for home care workers. Like others in health care, we often face poor wages and benefits and no dignity. Every time I talk with a new person about the union, I hope I can help them like I have been helped.

Enrique Pena, Orange County Advisory Board Member.
Enrique Pena
Orange
I have always been
involved with unions
in my work. If you
don't belong to the
union and fight for
yourself, no one will
fight for you.

Ly Nguyen, Orange County Advisory Board Member.
Ly Nguyen
Orange

In Orange County, the Public Authority was not paying attention to the issues for home care workers. Through UDW, I helped bring together providers and clients. We were able to put enough pressure to change the P. A.

Clara McDonald, Santa Barbara County Advisory Board Member.
Clara McDonald
Santa Barbara
Addus workers in Santa Barbara wouldn't have had a job at the end of June without the union's help. New providers should get involved, because the union staff can't do it for us. We are only as strong as our members.
Charles Lester, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
Charles Lester
San Diego

I've been working with member activists night and day in every county to expand benefits and services for members. We are fighting to preserve their jobs and enact legislation to improve their working conditions and provide secure delivery of their paychecks.

Mike Bocancea, Orange County Advisory Board Member.
Mike Bocancea
Orange
I am involved with
UDW because
organizing with
the Union is the
only way to make
smart changes in
our business. If
we increase our
strength and the
number of members,
we can make life
better for ourselves
and our clients.

Elena Kin-Keller, Shasta County Advisory Board Member.
Elena King-Keller
Shasta

Since 1999, I've found that being a part of UDW is the best way to build power. We need to talk to more providers and get them involved. Look out, California, here we come!

Tanya Kelly, Riverside Advisory Board Member.
Tanya Kelly
Riverside
I tell new members: go to the meetings; ask the questions. You need to be involved and know what your union is doing and where your money is going. I am excited that UDW is finally asking what OUR goals are and what WE want.

Ernesto Mandiburu, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
Ernesto Mendiburu
San Diego

UDW is all providers together working for a better tomorrow, but before we reach that tomorrow we need to come together today.

Lori Heizer, San Luis Obispo County Advisory Board Member.
Lori Heizer
San Luis Obispo
With the new office in San Luis Obispo, we have been very busy. We are developing leadership through a PAC, captains, and regular meetings.

Shirley Adams, Orange County Advisory Board Member.

As a union, we should put principles before
personalities.

Felice Connolly, Riverside County Advisory Board Member.
Felice Connolly
Riverside
I strongly believe that in numbers, there is strength, and we can do the most good by becoming members of UDWA/AFSCME.

Anthony Lenore, Riverside County Advisory Board Member.

As parents whose children require constant care we can never separate ourselves from that responsibility. We provide support for thousands of people who would otherwise be the responsibility of the County. I was part of the first negotiating committee in Riverside County and as will continue to be involved to improve wages for all providers.

Einettie Harper, Riverside County Advisory Board Member.
Elnettie Harper
Riverside
I am involved in our union – UDW – because I want a better standard of living for all Homecare workers.

Debbie Class, San Luis Obispo County Advisory Board Member.
Deb Class
San Luis Obispo

In San Luis Obispo, we succeeded in getting the County to replace the Public Authority system, which had been causing problems. By uniting through UDW, we can build more victories like this.

Simon Montoya, Riverside County Advisory Board Member.

I believe the Advisory Board will work to assure that each member has an equal voice in rebuilding our union, and hopefully my input will help achieve this goal.

Barbara Casteneda, Riverside County Advisory Board Member.
Barbara Casteneda

I want to be there for all of the providers so that we can make a better union.

Kathleen Brennan, San Diego County Advisory Board Member.
Kathleen Brennan

The people at UDW have restored my faith in mankind. People here aren't about their own agenda, but are fighting for us as a whole. If you want change, you have to be part of it.

Priscilla Moll
of Placer County (unpictured) is
also a member of the UDW Advisory Board.
