Union membership

Don't miss any of the advantages. UDW membership doesn't cost -- it pays!

UDW is issuing Union Identification/Membership Cards to all members.
You will have your own unique card identifying you as a UDW member!

Union membership works for you every day.  On the job, you get the protection of a contract and more strength in the workplace.  Off the job, the Union Plus benefits endorsed by AFSCME, give you and your family more buying power in the marketplace.  With the savings these members-only benefits provide, being a UDW/AFSCME member makes sense.

Make sure you are a member.  Many home care workers think that having dues deducted from their paycheck automatically makes them a union member.  Actually, to be a UDW member you need to have signed the membership card that came in your enrollment package.  Once you have become a member you have many privileges that you might not be aware of.

Being a member costs no more than not being a member.  Being a union member automatically gives you the following advantages:

Don't know if you signed a card?  Call us toll free: (800) 632-5016, or just print out a card and mail it in.
  • You receive special member benefits from our affiliate national union, AFSCME which includes credit privileges, vacation packages, etc. (see below)
  • You can vote on contract ratifications (contracts negotiated for your county). If you are not a union member, you can't vote.
  • Vote in National Executive Board elections (the people who administrate your union, and make decisions about where the resources go)
  • Nominate someone for office in the union, or run for office
  • Vote on a dues referendum (deciding on dues rate)

As a member of United Domestic Workers of America, you are an AFSCME affiliate, and are entitled to the following "AFSCME Advantage" programs:

Why We Offer Benefits

Why does UDW/AFSCME provide benefits for union members and their families?

We offer benefits to members because the programs help union members and their families in their daily lives, resulting in greater overall satisfaction with the union. Through AFSCME Advantage, members are able to save time and money at home, when they're off the job.

Of course, you may be wondering whether it's the union's place to endorse the Union Privilege benefits. But when you consider that unions originally were created to serve as "benefit societies" for members — or as cradle-to-grave providers — then it's only natural that AFSCME Advantage should follow labor's "benefit-providing" tradition. Remember, with the AFSCME Advantage benefits, union membership doesn't cost, it pays.
