Orange County teams up with anti-caregiver Freedom Foundation at IHSS orientations

At the request of an anti-worker and out-of-state organization, Orange County officials struck their latest blow to home care workers on Friday when they instituted a new policy at IHSS orientations to discourage new IHSS providers from becoming union members — a move that is not only anti-worker, but is also against the law. The county appears to be doing the bidding of a Washington state-based group called the Freedom Foundation. This isn’t the first time the Freedom Foundation has interfered at orientations and gone out of their way to harass home care workers and undermine our right to unionize. […]

UDW joins 115 groups demanding California Members of Congress Reject Tax Bill

This week, Congress is voting to pass a bill called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that will fundamentally change our economy by moving money from working families to the very wealthy and corporations. As a union of low-wage IHSS providers who care for seniors and people with disabilities, UDW vehemently opposes the bill and the deep, dangerous cuts it will trigger in Medicaid, IHSS, Medicare, Social Security and other essential programs. On Monday, we joined 115 other organizations to send a letter to California’s Congressional delegation outlining our concerns about the bill and the effects it will have on […]

UDW opposes Congress’ latest attempt to weaken the Americans with Disabilities Act

Leaders in Congress have introduced new legislation to water down the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The bill, HR 620, is designed to let business owners off the hook for ADA compliance, allowing them to ignore accessibility issues until there are complaints and creating hurdles for anyone who complains. This puts the burden for accessibility back onto people with disabilities, just like the bad old days before the ADA. The signing of the ADA in 1990 was a pivotal moment for disability rights. The ADA, which guarantees certain types of disability accommodations and other protections, led to a new era […]

The provision requires states that have Medicaid-funded personal care services programs like IHSS and WPCS to adopt an Electronic Visit Verification system (EVV) in their programs starting January 1, 2019, or face a reduction in federal funding. EVV systems electronically monitor the care we provide to our clients in their homes, including: Location of service delivery Date of service Start and end times of the service Type of service performed Individual […]

UDW caregivers in San Diego win much-needed raise in new agreement with the County

On Friday morning members of the UDW bargaining team reached a Tentative Agreement with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. The agreement, which still needs to be approved by union members, includes a much-needed wage increase for those who provide care through the state’s In-Home Supportive Services program (IHSS), and enough money to effectively eliminate the county waiting list for health insurance and lower all Kaiser premiums to just $30/month. “We’re excited,” said bargaining team member and UDW President Editha Adams, who cares for her teenaged daughter who lives with chronic lung disease and systematic scleroderma. “This will make […]
