UDW caregivers in San Diego win much-needed raise in new agreement with the County

UDW caregivers in San Diego win much-needed raise in new agreement with the County

On Friday morning members of the UDW bargaining team reached a Tentative Agreement with the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. The agreement, which still needs to be approved by union members, includes a much-needed wage increase for those who provide care through the state’s In-Home Supportive Services program (IHSS), and enough money to effectively eliminate the county waiting list for health insurance and lower all Kaiser premiums to just $30/month. “We’re excited,” said bargaining team member and UDW President Editha Adams, who cares for her teenaged daughter who lives with chronic lung disease and systematic scleroderma. “This will make […]

Urgent: Cuts to IHSS

Urgent: Cuts to IHSS

Take action to save home care Right now members of Congress are trying to repeal the health care bill, putting IHSS in serious danger.  It would cut $400 million from IHSS — meaning less care for our clients and loved ones It would phase out health care coverage for one third of UDW caregivers It would repeal the Affordable Care Act and put caps on federal funding for Medicaid/IHSS, which will lead to future cuts to the program as a result of less federal funding We can’t let this happen! Call 1-866-584-5792 TODAY and tell your Congress member to vote NO […]

In California, it is estimated that 880,000 or 1 in every 45 residents attended a local march in dozens of cities across the state. For UDW members, the reasons to march were as diverse as the nearly 98,000 IHSS providers our union represents, but a sense of urgency and a passion to fight for our rights united us all. We were among the huge crowds of people standing up for the […]

King Day celebrated with fiery speech, volunteerism

By Joshua Emerson Smith, San Diego Union Tribune, January 16th, 2017 The rising activist Rev. William J. Barber II on Monday headlined the 29th annual “All Peoples” celebration in San Diego, which honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Addressing a rapt audience, the fiery pastor from North Carolina delivered the keynote speech that repeatedly brought a sold-out crowd at the Balboa Park Activity Center to its feet. Barber took the stage and began delivering what would be an hour-long sermon addressing everything from gender equality to health care to minimum wage to voting rights, as well as myriad issues surrounding race and poverty. His recurring theme was […]
