On Sunday morning an IHSS client called UDW in a panic because his caregiver had not arrived yet to take him to his appointment. We reminded him that his appointment was for Monday and that a caregiver would be there to get him to his appointment on time. He was very embarrassed, so I told him we all get mixed up on the days, and that I do it myself quite often. Later I received a poem from this client via the caregiver that worked for him Monday. Understanding IHSS "unmet need" and how it impacts consumer hours

Why this is important: If the consumer has documented unmet need, across the board cuts to IHSS (like the recent 3.6 percent cut) will be applied first to this unmet need.  Therefore, the actual reduction in IHSS hours may be significantly less. Note that for almost 2,000 consumers with documented unmet need, the notices sent in late December about the 3.6% cut contained an inaccurate calculation of total authorized need.  DSS says that this was caused by a “programming error” and that corrected Notices of Action were sent to affected consumers on January 7, 2011. Consumers are also impacted by the new rules, yet are not given the same opportunity to view these materials. TO: IN-HOME SUPPORTIVE SERVICES (IHSS) PROVIDERS Read June 15 All County Letter from DSS Find Live-Scan (Fingerprinting) locations in your area New State Law Requires IHSS Providers to: 1.
